Psychological and Diagnostic Testing in Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Psychological and Diagnostic Testing at Creative Care

Psychological and diagnostic testing is essential to get a complete snapshot of a client’s emotional and psychological state, particularly in the case of dual diagnosis treatment. Individuals start to use drugs and alcohol problematically in response to an emptiness within – an unhealed wound. Over time, we start to see the substances as the issue as the problems they bring mask our underlying conditions. What follows is failed treatment episode after failed treatment episode as we attend to the symptoms of the problem rather than the problem itself. A complete assessment, including psychological and diagnostic testing, is how we begin to get to the roots co-occurring substance use disorders.

Types of Psychological and Diagnostic Testing

Upon admission to Creative Care, each client receives a comprehensive assessment by our expert staff, including interviews, surveys, questionnaires, and other test. Some of the diagnostic tools we use at Creative Care include:

  • Biopsychosocial Evaluation
  • Mental Status Evaluation (MSE)
  • Initial Psychiatric Evaluation
  • Nursing evaluation
  • Record Review
  • Symptom Distress (OQ45.2), Depression (PHQ-9), and Attachment (ECR) questionnaires
  • MMPI, Millon, or PAI

While the terms sound a bit intimidating, many of these tests take the form of an informal interview. We take a look at medical history, education level and work environment, any family or marriage concerns, and more to best identify a client’s needs.
